Jeonbuk National University Hospital Conducts Overseas Medical Volunteer Work in Kenya, Africa
10-Day Visit to Baringo, Kenya... Free Medical Treatment and Surgeries Conducted
Jeonbuk National University Hospital (Director Yoo Hee-cheol) announced on the 14th that its overseas medical volunteer team conducted medical volunteer activities for 10 days last month in the Baringo County area of Kenya.
According to Jeonbuk National University Hospital on the 14th, a total of 17 people, including hospital medical staff and volunteers, participated in this overseas medical volunteer activity in Kenya.
The volunteer team consisted of eight medical staff: Lee Sik (Nephrology), Kim Chan-young (Gastroenterology), Hwang Hong-pil (Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Transplant Surgery), Jung Tae-oh (Emergency Medicine), Hwang Jeong-hwan (Infectious Diseases), Kim Jong-heon (Thoracic Surgery), Lee Se-yeol (Daesajin Hospital Surgery), Moon Seong-shin (Daesajin Hospital Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine); six nurses (Kim Ji-yeon, Kim Hyun-jong, Kim Hyeong-ju, Lee Kyung-min, Lim Hye-ri, Lee Ji-eun); and three general volunteers (Kim Mi-seon, Kim Kyung, Lee Jeong-eun).

View original imageThe volunteer team visited areas with poor medical infrastructure such as Marigat, Kabartonjo, Pokot, and Kapchemuso, providing medical care to over 1,300 residents.
At Kabarnet Referral Hospital, the team performed six arteriovenous fistula surgeries for hemodialysis and one surgery to remove a cyst on the back.
In addition, the volunteer team conducted medical education seminars, introduced Korean culture, and engaged in social and cultural exchange activities with the local people.
Jeonbuk National University Hospital plans to expand exchanges in medical treatment, medical staff education, and research activities by signing a business agreement with Baringo County, Kenya.
Director Yoo Hee-cheol said, "With this business agreement with Baringo County, Kenya, we will continue active exchanges by providing continuous medical services and supporting capacity-building education for local medical personnel," adding, "We will continue medical volunteer activities for marginalized groups in areas with weak medical facilities and personnel."

Meanwhile, Jeonbuk National University Hospital has conducted a total of seven volunteer activities in Rwanda, Uganda, Congo, and Kenya since 2016, starting with volunteer work in Pygmy villages in partnership with the NGO Hands for the Little.
