Fortune-teller Couple Arrested Together for Forcibly Selling 'Lotto Winning Charms'
A shaman couple who committed fraud by forcibly selling talismans for lottery winnings were arrested by the police.
On the 13th, the Gwangju Western Police Station announced that they had applied for an arrest warrant for shaman A (in their 30s) on charges of fraud and extortion, and booked their partner B (in their 20s) without detention.
Since August 2022, they operated a fortune-telling shop in Ssangchon-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, and are accused of embezzling about 27.5 million won from three victims over nine occasions for talisman purchase costs, as well as extorting promissory notes worth about 200 million won.
They approached victims through social networking services (SNS), deceiving them with claims that a gut ritual was necessary to prevent family members from dying, and demanded large sums of money.
They also forcibly sold talismans by deceiving victims that they had to purchase talismans and bury them at locations designated by the perpetrators in order to win the lottery.
