Song Gap-seok promises installation of elevator at Yangdong Market Station, a 20-year local wish
Song Gap-seok, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu (Gap), announced a pledge to install an elevator at Yangdong Market Station, a long-standing wish of 20 years.
Since its opening in 2004, 20 years have passed, but Yangdong Market Station is the only one among the 20 subway stations in Gwangju without an elevator, causing great inconvenience to citizens.
Recently, the number of tourists visiting Yangdong Market, the largest traditional market in Honam, has been increasing, and more than 4,000 apartment units near Yangdong Market Station are scheduled to be completed in February this year, leading to continuous demands for the installation of an elevator at Yangdong Market.
In particular, the proportion of elderly citizens visiting Yangdong Market is high, making safety issues due to steep stairs serious. Mobility-impaired individuals, such as the disabled, have no choice but to rely solely on wheelchair lifts.
Last year, a budget was allocated for design services to install an elevator at Yangdong Market Station, but no progress has been made so far.
Representative Song said, “With the determination that installed the elevator in the underground passage of Gwangcheon Terminal, a 27-year-old wish, I will definitely solve the biggest issue of Yangdong Market that has not been resolved for 20 years this time.”
