Goheung-gun Selected for Discovery and Development Contest of Small but Strong Potential Tourist Destinations

Opportunities for Revitalizing the Local Economy and Addressing the Population Decline Crisis

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that the ‘Goheung Space Launch Observatory’ has been finally selected in the 2024 Jeonnam Small-scale Potential Tourist Destination Discovery and Development Contest, hosted by the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Tourism Organization.

The Small-scale Potential Tourist Destination Discovery and Development Project is a project by the Korea Tourism Organization to discover and nurture tourist destinations with high growth potential. It aims to develop travel courses and commercialize products, activate tourist sites, and foster new tourist attractions through systematic consulting and intensive promotional marketing to revitalize regional tourism.

This year’s selected small-scale potential tourist destination, the ‘Goheung Space Launch Observatory,’ is located 17 km in a straight line offshore from the Naro Space Center, Korea’s first space launch vehicle launch site, making it an ideal place to properly view rocket launches from the Naro Space Center.

The Goheung Space Launch Observatory consists of one underground floor and seven above-ground floors. The most popular spot is the 7th floor, where visitors can experience a fantastic view of the Dadohae (Korean Archipelago) from a 360-degree rotating observatory caf?.

In particular, the area around the Goheung Space Launch Observatory, along with Namyeol Sunrise Beach, a surfing hotspot, offers picturesque views of the islands of the Dadohae, which display diverse scenes of morning and sunset, making it a nature-friendly tourist destination with high expectations for growth.

Following its selection in the 2024 Small-scale Potential Tourist Destination Discovery and Development Contest, Goheung-gun and the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Tourism Organization plan to sign a business agreement and jointly carry out various promotional marketing activities to elevate the Goheung Space Launch Observatory as a representative tourist destination in the Jeonnam region.

A Goheung-gun official stated, “Through the 2024 Small-scale Potential Tourist Destination Discovery and Development Project, we will cooperate closely with the Gwangju-Jeonnam branch of the Korea Tourism Organization to secure relational populations through tourism, revitalize the local economy, and proactively respond to the crisis of population decline.”
