Gangnam-gu Expands Six Public and National Childcare Centers This Year
Increase in Reconstruction Move-in Complexes Leads to Opening of 6 More Sites This Year Following 4 Last Year, Totaling 71 Sites Operated
Enhancing Public Accessibility by Securing Dedicated Parking Lots for Convenience of Parents Outside Apartment Complexes
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will expand six public daycare centers in complexes scheduled for reconstruction move-in this year, operating a total of 71 centers.
With the activation of reconstruction increasing the number of newly occupied complexes, the district is striving to build a public childcare infrastructure that matches this growth. In accordance with the mandatory installation of public daycare centers in complexes with over 500 new households, four centers were opened last year within each complex: Gaepo Sangnok Starhills (1,703 households) and Gaepo Xi Residence (3,375 households) in Gaepo 2-dong, and LH Suseo 1 Complex (830 households) and The Arkrion (597 households) in Segok-dong. This year, public daycare centers will be opened in line with move-in schedules to establish a public childcare system.
Accordingly, four daycare centers are planned to be established within The H Firstier I-Park (310 Gaepo-ro, former Gaepo Jugong 1 Complex), where 6,702 households are scheduled to move in this March.
Additionally, one center will open in July within the Suseo Station Area Happy Housing A2 Block (138-2 Jagok-dong), and one home daycare center in Gangnam Desiang Park (63 Heolleung-ro 590-gil) in Segok-dong will be converted to a public daycare center.
In particular, to enhance public accessibility, parents outside the apartment complexes can conveniently use the daycare centers established within the complexes. For example, the ‘Keunsol Daycare Center’ within Gaepo Xi Residence, boasting a spacious area of 1,368㎡ (1st and 2nd floors), has secured a dedicated daycare parking lot in the underground parking garage to facilitate easy access for external users. For The H Firstier I-Park, after on-site visits, the district coordinated with the association to address the drop zone issue by enabling daycare parents to conveniently use the apartment elevators and underground parking.
Furthermore, environmental improvements and safety inspections are being promoted to build a safe childcare environment where children can be entrusted with confidence. Support is provided for environmental improvement construction costs to secure safety at 41 aging daycare centers (21 district-run, 20 private/home-based). Full funding is provided for urgent repairs such as leaks, boiler malfunctions, and facility damages. Safety inspections are conducted twice a year for 80 daycare centers and 67 children’s playground facilities, and detailed safety diagnoses and seismic performance evaluations are carried out for 18 centers.
For daycare centers with a total floor area of 430㎡ or more, IoT-based environmental sensors are installed to maintain indoor air quality by monitoring fine dust, ultrafine dust, carbon dioxide, and other air quality factors. Among 59 such facilities, 26 installed IoT environmental sensors last year, and the remaining 33 will be equipped this year. Additionally, energy performance improvement remodeling, including window and insulation work, is carried out for public daycare centers that have been completed for over 10 years to enhance the quality of the childcare environment.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “As Gangnam-gu was the only one among Seoul’s 25 districts to see an increase in births last year, we are also focusing on creating an environment where children can be raised with peace of mind. We will continue to increase the number of public daycare centers, which are highly preferred by parents, to build ‘Gangnam, a childcare city where raising children is easy.’”
