Assistant Clinical Professor Lee Sun-young of the Department of Radiology at Yonsei University Severance Hospital was recognized for her research that improves long-term prognosis of patients based on pre-treatment imaging findings of liver cancer and cholangiocarcinoma, which have high prevalence in Korea. As a specialist in internal medicine and radiology, Professor Lee has published related research results in top journals in the fields of liver cancer and surgery. In addition, she has authored numerous research papers as the first author in prestigious international journals and received the 2022 Korea L'Or?al-UNESCO Women in Science Fellowship.
Lecturer Lee Hyuk-hee of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Yonsei University College of Medicine was highly evaluated for his research on secondary disease prevention strategies for cancer survivors. He was the first to identify the risk of cardiovascular disease caused by differences in physical activity before and after cancer diagnosis among cancer survivors. This research was published as a research paper in a leading international journal. He plans to continue research aimed at improving the prognosis of cancer survivors by developing tailored disease prevention strategies for them.
Assistant Professor Jung Seung-ho of the Department of Neurology at Sangye Paik Hospital was honored for publishing a research paper on the potential drug repositioning of dipeptidyl peptidase (DPP)-4 inhibitors in Parkinson's disease in the world-renowned journal Brain. He proposed the possibility of using DPP-4, which has been used for diabetes treatment, as a therapeutic agent for Parkinson's disease, for which no disease-modifying drugs have yet been developed. Through research on the interrelationship between DPP-4 activity, inflammatory markers, and dopamine neuron loss in Parkinson's disease, Professor Jung plans to continuously investigate the mechanism of action and disease-modifying effects of DPP-4 inhibitors in Parkinson's disease.
Professor Jung, speaking on behalf of the awardees, said, “I am pleased to receive this award alongside promising young medical scientists who have achieved research results recognized both domestically and internationally,” and added, “I hope that a virtuous cycle will continue where young medical scientists contribute to the advancement of medicine at home and abroad through creative research.”
