The Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education Unveils Blueprint for New Headquarters to Lead Future Education
February Resident Briefing Session and Basic Plan Establishment by March
Design Competition and Facility Construction Leading to Completion in 2028
The blueprint for the construction of a new Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education building for the future education of Gwangju has been unveiled.
On the 26th, the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education held a briefing session on the "Preliminary Feasibility Study and Basic Plan Establishment Service for Office Relocation" in the large conference room on the 2nd floor of the education office.
The briefing was attended by Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon and others, where presentations were made on ▲optimal site selection for the new office ▲basic plan for the new office construction ▲plans for utilizing the current office building.
The optimal site plan for the new office was selected based on the analysis results of an evaluation team composed of experts in related fields. Among four proposals, the plan to demolish and rebuild the building on the former School Facilities Support Group site in Sinchang-dong, Gwangsan-gu was chosen.
The new office will have a total floor area of 34,116.9㎡, nearly double the size of the existing Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education and Education Research Information Center buildings (17,874.4㎡), with a total project cost expected to be 153.1 billion KRW.
Based on the service results, the Office of Education will hold a residents' briefing session in February and establish the basic plan by March. After passing the Ministry of Education’s feasibility study and central investment review, the new office is expected to be completed as early as 2028 following design competitions and facility construction.
Meanwhile, once the new office is completed, the current Hwajeong-dong office will be reconfigured into an integrated care center, teacher support center, cultural complex library, and youth autonomous cultural space. Additionally, the Citizens' Cooperation Promotion Center currently located on the relocation site will be moved to the Gwangju Education Research Information Center.
Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon stated, “The new office will not be just an administrative building but a space for future education,” adding, “We will actively promote this project by actively collecting opinions from the educational community including students, parents, and staff.”

The current Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education building has been in use for 35 years since 1988 and was rated C in last year’s safety inspection, indicating outdated facilities. Furthermore, due to limited space, there have been continuous demands for improvement of the work environment.
