On the 28th, HD Hyundai announced that it held the naming ceremony for the 16,200 TEU methanol-powered ultra-large container ship at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan on the 26th.
The vessel measures 351 meters in length, 54 meters in width, and 33 meters in height, and is the first of a total of 18 ultra-large container ships ordered by HD Hyundai from the global shipping group AP Moller-Maersk (hereafter Maersk).
About 100 officials attended the event, including HD Hyundai Vice Chairman Jung Ki-sun, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Presidents Lee Sang-gyun and Park Seung-yong, and Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla, celebrating the birth of the new ship.
The first methanol-powered ultra-large container ship was named the "Ane Maersk," after Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the mother of Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla and Chairwoman of AP Moller Holdings.
Notably, for the first time in an ultra-large container ship, the accommodation quarters were placed at the bow of the ship, enhancing both cargo loading efficiency and navigation visibility.
After the naming ceremony, Vice Chairman Jung Ki-sun toured the accommodation quarters and engine room with Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla, wishing for the safe voyage of the Ane Maersk.
Previously, in September last year, HD Hyundai built and delivered the world's first 2,100 TEU methanol-powered container ship to Maersk, jointly declaring "A New Era of Shipping."
Additionally, on January 15, Vice Chairman Jung Ki-sun met with Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland, to discuss ways to promote decarbonization and strengthen cooperation on eco-friendly ships.
At the naming ceremony, Lee Sang-gyun, President of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, stated, "Based on a partnership spanning about 40 years, the two companies are advancing the green ocean era of the planet," adding, "We will lead innovation in the future ship market with cutting-edge eco-friendly technology."
Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said, "The Ane Maersk built by HD Hyundai will be a turning point for Maersk in achieving its market-leading climate goals."
