Kim Dong-yeon Conducts On-Site Inspection of Water Pollution in Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek Rivers as First Schedule After Returning to Korea

View original imageGyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon visited the water pollution sites in Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek rivers on the morning of the 22nd, immediately after returning from the World Economic Forum (WEF, Davos Forum).
At 10 a.m. that day, Governor Kim visited the confluence of Jinwi Stream in Baekbong-ri, Cheongbuk-eup, Pyeongtaek City to inspect the site. He then discussed response measures with Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun, Pyeongtaek Mayor Jeong Jang-seon, National Assembly members Hong Gi-won and An Min-seok, Gyeonggi Province Safety Management Director Kim Neung-sik, Gyeonggi Fire and Disaster Headquarters Chief Jo Seon-ho, Gyeonggi Water Resources Headquarters Director Yoon Deok-hee, and Gyeonggi Health and Environment Research Institute Director Kwon Bo-yeon at the Yanggam Water Quality Restoration Center in Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong City.
Governor Kim said, "Everyone has worked hard. The province has also spent disaster management funds, and we will do everything possible for now, including cooperating on requests for special disaster area declarations and applications for special grants." He added, "Please establish fundamental measures not only for visible damage but also for soil contamination, and inform environmental groups and residents very transparently so they can feel reassured."
Earlier, at around 9:55 p.m. on the 9th, a fire at a hazardous materials warehouse in Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong City, caused harmful chemicals to flow into nearby small streams and management streams, resulting in water pollution damage over an 8.5 km section.
Gyeonggi Province formed an emergency response support team on the 12th and elevated it to a disaster safety countermeasures headquarters on the 18th, subsequently allocating 3 billion KRW from the provincial disaster management fund to Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek cities.

Hwaseong and Pyeongtaek cities have installed a total of 19 containment embankments to prevent polluted water from flowing into Jinwi Stream and deployed tank lorries to block contaminated water, treating 35,509 tons by the 21st. Gyeonggi Province plans to continue reinforcing the containment embankments and operate the wastewater treatment plants receiving contaminated water 24 hours a day to maintain pollution treatment activities.
