Minister Sang-min Lee Inspects Civil Defense Facilities in Yeonpyeong-myeon
Intensive Inspection of Alarm Facilities and Resident Evacuation Facilities
Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min visited Yeonpyeong-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon on the 12th to minimize civilian damage in the event of enemy provocations or emergencies and inspected the operation and management status of civil defense facilities and the resident protection system.
During this inspection, Minister Lee focused on checking the alarm facilities and resident evacuation facilities among the civil defense facilities. Yeonpyeong-myeon, located at the northernmost part of the West Sea, is an island area about 10 km away from Bupo-ri, North Korea, and operates a total of 17 civil defense facilities including resident evacuation shelters and alarm equipment to prepare for air raid situations.
On site, Minister Lee listened to the emergency response system of Yeonpyeong-myeon from Ongjin-gun officials, including alarm transmission and evacuation drills, and special safety inspections of civil defense facilities, and inspected the alarm equipment operated at the Yeonpyeong-myeon office and nearby resident evacuation facilities.
The minister urged that alarm facilities be regularly inspected and repetitive alarm issuance training be conducted in preparation for civil defense situations, and that continuous publicity and resident evacuation drills be carried out so that residents know the locations of evacuation facilities in advance and can evacuate quickly in emergencies.
In addition, through conversations with Yeonpyeongdo residents, he listened to their difficulties such as whether there were any inconveniences living on the island and whether living water was being supplied properly.
Before the on-site inspection that day, Minister Lee visited the Yeonpyeongdo Bombardment Memorial Tower and Monument located in Daeyeonpyeong Peace Park to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the Yeonpyeongdo bombardment and soldiers who sacrificed for national defense in the Battle of Yeonpyeong. He also visited a military unit to encourage soldiers working hard on guard duty.
