Debate Over Osaka Expo Postponement Arises After Noto Earthquake... First Construction Begins
On January 1st, a strong earthquake struck the Ishikawa Prefecture area in central Japan, raising discussions about postponing the 2025 Osaka-Kansai World Expo. Amid this, Kyodo News reported on the 10th that construction of overseas pavilions has begun.
According to the report, construction of the Singapore Pavilion, one of the 'Type A' overseas pavilions, started on the artificial island Yumeshima in Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. 'Type A' refers to a method where participating countries fund and build their own pavilions.
The Singapore Pavilion is the first among the Type A overseas pavilions to commence construction. Completion is expected locally around November.
As of the previous day, construction companies have been assigned for 35 countries wishing to build Type A overseas pavilions. Some countries hope to start construction within this month, but overall, Kyodo News notes that preparations are noticeably delayed.

Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura believes that even with the overlap of recovery work from the Noto Peninsula earthquake and Expo-related construction, there will be no issues with the preparation schedule. Governor Yoshimura explained at the prefectural office that the Noto Peninsula earthquake recovery and Expo construction are "completely different projects."
