Chamiyeong IBS CI Recognized for Research Achievements as a 'Native Doctor'
The Institute for Basic Science (IBS, President Noh Do Young) announced on the 10th that Cha Mi Young, CI (Chief Investigator) of the Data Science Group in the Center for Mathematical and Computational Sciences, has been appointed as the first Korean director of the Max Planck Institute. The Max Planck Institute (MPI) in Germany is a world-renowned basic science research institution.
Starting in June, CI Cha will begin her role as Scientific Director at the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy located in Bochum, Germany, leading the research group "Data Science for Humanity."
The Max Planck Society operates 85 affiliated institutes across Germany and abroad, covering various fields of basic science. Among the approximately 300 directors leading these institutes, this is the first time a scientist of Korean nationality has been appointed.
CI Cha is an expert in the field of data science with over 20,000 citations according to Google Scholar. She graduated from the Department of Computer Science at KAIST, earned her master's and doctoral degrees from the same institution, and has been a professor at KAIST since 2010. In 2019, she was selected as a CI at IBS, leading the Data Science Group and publishing numerous outstanding papers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

CI Cha expressed her aspirations, stating, "I will do my best with a great sense of responsibility to contribute to society through data science."
