[Weather] Less Than Expected... Snow and Rain Continue Until the 10th
Snow fell mainly in the central region, but the snowfall amount was less than expected. However, the snow is expected to mostly stop before the afternoon after continuing until the morning of the 10th.
As of 5 p.m. on the 9th, the highest amount of newly accumulated snow (daily snowfall) was 3.8 cm in Pyeongchang-gun (Myeonon), Gangwon Province. Seoul recorded 2.8 cm of new snow that day.
Although it did snow, it did not reach the 'heavy snow' level forecasted earlier.
The snow cloud band accompanying the low pressure system moved faster than expected, resulting in a shorter duration of snowfall and less accumulation.
The mobile high pressure system, which caused the cold wave last weekend, did not persist as long as expected in the southeast of South Korea. Additionally, the strong expansion of the continental high pressure approaching from the northeast and the relatively smooth east-west flow in the upper atmosphere seem to have pushed the low pressure system quickly southeastward.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted at 5 p.m. that snow would continue in parts of the central inland and southern inland regions, while snow or rain would persist in other areas and Jeju.
Later, precipitation is expected to end starting from northern Seoul, Incheon, and northern Gyeonggi by late night, with snow and rain stopping in southern Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungcheong, and Honam by the morning of the 10th, and in Yeongnam and Jeju by the afternoon of the 10th.
Additional snowfall amounts are expected as follows: 5?10 cm in northern Gyeongbuk, southwestern inland Gyeongbuk, and northeastern mountainous Gyeongbuk; 3?8 cm (up to over 10 cm) in southern inland Gangwon, central mountainous Gangwon, southern mountainous Gangwon, Chungbuk, and eastern Jeonbuk; 3?8 cm in Daejeon, Sejong, inland Chungnam, and mountainous Jeju; 2?7 cm in Seoul and southern inland Gyeonggi; and 1?5 cm in Incheon, western coastal Gyeonggi, northern inland Gyeonggi, central inland Gangwon, northern inland Gangwon, northern mountainous Gangwon, eastern coastal Gangwon, western coastal Chungnam, western inland Jeonbuk, Daegu, central inland Gyeongbuk, southern inland Gyeongbuk, eastern coastal Gyeongbuk, Ulsan, and inland Gyeongnam.
Expected additional precipitation amounts are 5?20 mm in Chungcheong, Jeonbuk, Sejong, Yeongnam, and Jeju; 5?10 mm in southern inland Gangwon, central mountainous Gangwon, southern mountainous Gangwon, Gwangju, and Jeonnam; and around 5 mm in the Seoul metropolitan area and other regions.
Temperatures will remain below freezing mainly inland on the morning of the 10th. During the daytime, when temperatures are below 0 degrees Celsius, snow and rain may freeze, creating icy patches, so caution is advised. The lowest temperatures on the morning of the 10th are expected to range from -7°C to 4°C, and the highest daytime temperatures from 4°C to 10°C.
Expected minimum and maximum temperatures in major cities are: Seoul -3°C to 6°C, Incheon -3°C to 4°C, Daejeon -3°C to 4°C, Gwangju and Daegu 0°C to 7°C, Ulsan 3°C to 7°C, and Busan 3°C to 10°C.
