Minister of Culture Awarded to Bishkek Institute
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the King Sejong Institute Foundation announced on the 9th that the King Sejong Institutes in Bogota, Brussels, Bishkek, Tainan, and Tallinn, which received high scores in last year's operational evaluation, have been selected as the best King Sejong Institutes. The Bishkek King Sejong Institute will also be awarded a commendation from the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The King Sejong Institute is an institution that promotes the Korean language and Korean culture overseas. It operates in 248 locations across 85 countries. The cumulative number of students is approximately 700,000.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the King Sejong Institute Foundation evaluated the 2022 performance through document and on-site evaluations, receipt of objections, and review by the evaluation committee. The Bishkek King Sejong Institute, which received the highest score, saw a 2,134% increase in the number of students over 10 years (from 58 in 2013 to 1,296). It also expanded the spread of Korean language and culture through collaboration with the local embassy, Korean Education Center, and Taekwondo Promotion Foundation.
The Bogota King Sejong Institute achieved results in external cooperation by signing a business agreement with Medell?n City in Colombia and exchanging with twenty-six local universities. The Brussels King Sejong Institute promoted the Korean language and culture by participating in Belgium's largest cultural expo and other events. The Tainan King Sejong Institute held Hangul cultural experience events and Hangul handwriting contests in collaboration with the National Museum of Taiwan and others. The Tallinn King Sejong Institute received high scores for offering various Korean language courses such as Korean news reading, idioms class, and TOPIK preparation class.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism provides benefits to the best King Sejong Institutes, including additional operational support funds and priority selection for specialized support projects. They are also granted qualifications to act as leaders for other King Sejong Institutes. The King Sejong Institute Foundation encourages these institutes to grow and develop independently by sharing their operational cases with other King Sejong Institutes. If improvements are needed, support is provided through ongoing operational consultations and other means.
