Dongmyung University Shows Strong Performance in 'K-Service Learning' in Ho Chi Minh City
Overseas Volunteering and Learning Combined, Global No.1 Project
Collaboration between Hyutek University and Gwangju Women's University, Nursing, Visual Design, and Beauty Teams
“K-Service Learning has arrived in Ho Chi Minh City!”
Dongmyung University (President Jeon Ho-hwan) visited Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on the 3rd for the first global activity of Service Learning (Service+Learning). After activities by three teams in nursing, visual design, and beauty, they returned on the 8th.
This project involved exporting ideas prepared over two months in Korea overseas to engage in “Do-ing” (challenge, experience, practice). It was the first “global” service learning linking the Yeongnam and Honam regions through a collaboration between Dongmyung University and Gwangju Women’s University. Dongmyung University participated with the Departments of Nursing, Visual Design, and Beauty Industry.
The service learning team, jointly promoted by Korea and Vietnam, consisted of a total of 30 members (9 from Dongmyung University, 8 from Gwangju Women’s University, and 13 from HUTECH University), divided into three teams by field.
The three teams selected themes to apply their major knowledge in the Ho Chi Minh area in the fields of nursing, visual design, and beauty.
The nursing team, totaling 12 members (3 third-year students including Kim Ye-jin from Dongmyung University’s Department of Nursing, 3 from Gwangju Women’s University, and 7 from HUTECH University), visited health centers and senior welfare centers in Ho Chi Minh City, conducting health check-ups and cleaning the environment around the health centers over three days.
The visual design team collaborated with the Korean-Vietnamese Technical Education Center at HUTECH University (Vice Director Won Gwi-jung). Kim Song-eun and two others (third-year students from Dongmyung University’s Department of Visual Design) carried out design work and installation activities to promote Korean culture.
The beauty team (first-year students including Jo Ye-ran from Dongmyung University’s Department of Beauty Industry, 2 from Gwangju Women’s University, and 2 from HUTECH University) provided nail services to students. They also engaged in technical exchanges between adult learners (from Dongmyung University’s Future Convergence College) and school-age students.
Professor Lee Ji-eun, in charge (Department of Welfare Management), said, “This was the first overseas service learning carried out through cooperation among students of the same major. We were delighted that HUTECH University’s faculty and students warmly welcomed us,” adding, “We will encourage more students to participate in global service learning every year.”
Jung Ji-eon, Director of the Career Action Center at Dongmyung University, expressed expectations, saying, “This program, conducted in cooperation beyond Busan to Gyeongnam and with HUTECH University, will bring great results by adding diverse experiences.”
On the 24th, the results of this global service learning will be presented as an excellent case at the four-university joint service learning performance sharing meeting.

Service learning, which combines the concepts of service and learning, has been a university innovation support project conducted by Dongmyung University since 2020. Over seven semesters since 2020, more than 100 service learners from 12 departments have performed volunteer work linked to their majors at various institutions, demonstrating the effectiveness of the service learning teaching method. This year marked the first time a global service learning program was conducted linking countries.
