Gyeongdongwon "For a Carbon Neutral Future"
Indoor Garden Artificial Soil Production
Kyungdong Navien, Gas Usage Reduction
On the 5th floor of The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido, Seoul, there is an indoor garden called 'Sounds Forest' spanning 3,300㎡. During last Christmas season, a large 11-meter-high tree was installed, making it a popular spot attracting about 10,000 visitors per day on weekends. Although it is an indoor garden, various plants grow well, making it a great place for a walk even on regular days. The soil used to create this garden is an artificial soil called 'Paraso.' Kyungdongwon, the parent company of Kyungdong Navien, developed this artificial soil to create green spaces in cities and support carbon neutrality.
On the 8th, Kyungdongwon announced that the artificial soil 'Paraso' is about one-sixth the weight of regular soil, minimizing building load, and has excellent breathability while retaining appropriate moisture, making it optimal for plant growth. Since the soil is processed at high temperatures, it is also excellent for preventing weeds and pests. This is why Paraso is used not only in The Hyundai Seoul but also in the rooftop gardens of the Sejong Government Complex, registered in the Guinness World Records as the world's largest rooftop garden, and the Yeongdeungpo Times Square rooftop garden.
Kyungdongwon developed the artificial soil using technology based on 'Perlite.' Perlite is a non-combustible mineral formed when lava rapidly cools as it flows into surface lakes or seas. It has a low risk of catching fire and does not emit toxic gases during fires. Its low thermal conductivity provides excellent insulation, making it effective for energy savings. A Kyungdongwon official explained, "Perlite, which can replace synthetic inorganic fibers, is environmentally friendly and does not contain harmful substances such as asbestos." Kyungdongwon produces various fireproof and insulating materials for industrial and construction use utilizing this technology.
Kyungdongwon also contributes to carbon neutrality through its home network business. Among home network products, 'System Gakbang' is a technology that allows individual temperature control in each room. It enables the use of only the necessary heating energy according to the needs of family members, effectively reducing heating costs and energy consumption.
Efforts toward carbon neutrality can also be seen through various products of Kyungdong Navien. Kyungdong Navien, which is expanding its home environment appliance business based on eco-friendliness and high efficiency, has a representative product: the condensing boiler. Compared to conventional boilers, it can reduce gas usage by up to 28.4%. It can reduce annual nitrogen oxide emissions by about 87%, carbon monoxide by 70.5%, and carbon dioxide by 19%. The Ministry of Environment estimates that using condensing boilers can also reduce annual heating costs by approximately 440,000 KRW.

In addition to condensing boilers, Kyungdong Navien's 'Clean Ventilation System' makes indoor air comfortable while saving energy. It provides air purification and ventilation without opening windows, and by recycling heat through a heat exchanger, it can save up to 66.8% energy in winter and up to 24.2% in summer.
