Seung-Hwan Seo, President of Yonsei University, Receives Honorary Doctorate in Education from Korea University
Korea University announced on the 5th that it awarded an honorary doctorate in education to Seok Seung-hwan, President of Yonsei University, at the Baekjunyun Memorial Samsung Hall.
On this day, President Seo received the honorary doctorate from Korea University in recognition of his contributions to developing the innovative education platform 'LearnUs' during his tenure and for significantly contributing to the accumulation of research capabilities by introducing the first quantum computer in South Korea. LearnUs is a next-generation education support platform that combines online and offline classes.
Korea University also acknowledged Professor Seo's achievements as an urban economics expert who integrated theory and practice and reflected the implications derived from his research results in the development of university management.
At the degree conferment ceremony, Korea University President Kim Dong-won said, "President Seo took the lead in establishing an online education platform during the pandemic, presenting an educational model for the post-COVID-19 era," adding, "He laid the foundation for Yonsei University to grow into a forward base for future scholarship."
President Seo expressed his thoughts, saying, "With the rapid advancement of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, anxieties about future societies such as climate change are intensifying. At times like these, I believe it is more urgent than ever for universities to set common challenges they face and work together collaboratively."
Born in 1956, President Seo graduated from Seoul High School and Yonsei University with a degree in economics and earned a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University Graduate School.

He joined Yonsei University as a professor in the Department of Economics in 1987 and held administrative positions such as Planning Director and Director of the International Campus Education Center. He also served as president of the Korean Association of Applied Economics and the Korean Regional Studies Association. From March 2013 to March 2015, he served as Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
