The iconic Gwangandaegyo Bridge in Busan unveils a new look as the city embarks on its journey as a 'Global Hub City, Busan'!
Busan City announced that the newly enhanced Gwangandaegyo Bridge, adorned with more brilliant and vivid landscape lighting and media content, will be officially lit for the first time at a lighting ceremony on the 6th at 6:20 PM.
Since May last year, the city has been carrying out the installation of landscape lighting and media content on Gwangandaegyo Bridge as part of the international tourism city project called the ‘Seven Bridge Project.’
Returning after 10 years with more dazzling and vivid landscape lighting and media content, Gwangandaegyo Bridge will be unveiled alongside the M-Drone Light Show in Gwangalli during the first weekend of 2024.
The lighting ceremony will be attended by about 100 people, including Mayor Park Hyung-jun, Superintendent of Education Ha Yoon-soo, National Assembly member Jeon Bong-min, Suyeong District Mayor Kang Seong-tae, District Council Chair Kim Bo-eon, City Council member Park Cheol-jung, Busan Tourism Corporation President Lee Jeong-sil, Busan Tourism Corporation Association Chairman Lee Tae-seop, project stakeholders, and Busan citizens. The event will share the project’s achievements and showcase the landscape lighting and media content demonstrations.
The ‘Gwangandaegyo Bridge Landscape Lighting Improvement Project,’ with a total budget of approximately 7 billion KRW, is a core project of the ‘International Tourism City Development Project’ launched in January 2020 and part of the 'Seven Bridge Landmark Project.' It is the world’s largest bridge LED improvement project, implemented with a total budget of about 7.4 billion KRW (50% national funding, 50% city funding).
Gwangandaegyo Bridge is a double-deck marine bridge spanning 7.42 km across the sea, managed and operated by the Busan Facilities Corporation.
The existing landscape lighting on Gwangandaegyo Bridge was installed in December 2013. After conducting detailed design services in 2022, the removal of the old lighting facilities began in May last year, and the construction was completed by the end of last year, presenting new lighting and content after 10 years.
This landscape lighting improvement project focused on installing landscape lighting on the main cables, hanger ropes, and truss sections, reducing the spacing between lights, increasing the number of lights, adding new colors to improve message delivery, color quality, and resolution, and installing moving lights to add dynamic elements, enhancing visibility and production effects.
The media content to be showcased on Gwangandaegyo Bridge consists of a total of 77 types, organized by day of the week, season, and events, and will be operated accordingly to various events and seasons.
The content includes signature content depicting the symbolism, form, and integration of Gwangandaegyo Bridge; real-time data art combining everyday data such as air quality, rainfall, and traffic volume; and various content tailored to different events and seasons.
The 77 types of media content include 3 signature pieces, 14 event videos, 27 LED art videos, 12 data visualizations, and 21 basic videos.
Since 2021, the city has been promoting the ‘Seven Bridge Project’ as part of the international tourism city initiative.
The ‘Seven Bridge Project’ aims to highlight the beauty of Busan connected by seven coastal bridges by adding aesthetics and playfulness, promoting Busan’s unique tourism content by linking various surrounding tourist resources, and contributing to regional economic revitalization.
The seven bridges are Gwangandaegyo Bridge, Yeongdodaegyo Bridge, Busanhangdaegyo Bridge, Namhangdaegyo Bridge, Eulsukdodaegyo Bridge, Sinhodaegyo Bridge, and Gadeokdaegyo Bridge.
This landscape lighting and media content installation is part of the project, aiming to transform the unique colors and storytelling of the Seven Bridges into world-class tourism content.
Mayor Park Hyung-jun said, “As we welcome the inaugural year of 2024 as the ‘Global Hub City, Busan,’ Gwangandaegyo Bridge also dons a new look after 10 years to greet our citizens.” He added, “I am pleased to showcase the brilliance of Busan, the top city for night tourism, at the start of the new year. The M-Drone Light Show, which will illuminate Busan’s night sky along with Gwangandaegyo Bridge, carries the hopes of our citizens for the new year and the energy of the Blue Dragon, so I ask for your active interest and participation.” He continued, “Including the newly renovated Gwangandaegyo Bridge, we will create ‘Busan, a city where people want to live again and a happy city’ together with the Seven Bridges, which symbolize good fortune.”
The landscape lighting and media content of Gwangandaegyo Bridge will undergo system stabilization and testing until February and will be officially operated by the Busan Facilities Corporation starting in March.
