Lee Jae-myung Attacked During Busan Visit... 'Transported to Hospital' (Update)
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, was attacked by an assailant while carrying out his schedule in Busan on the 2nd.
On that day, after inspecting the site of the new airport on Gadeokdo Island in Busan in the morning, Lee exchanged questions and answers with reporters about topics such as "What is your stance on Lee Nak-yeon's new party formation?" Supporters nearby shouted, "Leader, stay strong." During this, Lee was attacked on the left side of his neck by an unidentified man and collapsed bleeding.
The assailant approached claiming to be a supporter of Lee and requested a sign, then pulled out a weapon and attacked Lee. The assailant was reportedly wearing a crown with the words "I am Lee Jae-myung" written on it. The police arrested the assailant at the scene. The assailant was carrying a 20cm weapon at the time of arrest and is estimated to be in his 60s.
Lee was transported to the hospital by ambulance. His health condition has not yet been disclosed.
At the time of the attack, Democratic Party officials reportedly inquired whether there were medical personnel nearby.
Lee visited Busan to comfort citizens worried that the construction of the Gadeokdo new airport and other projects might be disrupted following the failure to host the 2030 World Expo in Busan.
