Average Monthly Private Education Expenses Near 1 Million Won... "The Most Burdensome Expense"

The average monthly private education expense per household in Gyeonggi Province was found to be close to 1 million KRW. The most burdensome expense identified by household heads in their 40s was also 'education costs.'
According to the '2023 Gyeonggi Province Social Survey' report released by Gyeonggi Province on the 30th, the average monthly private education expense per household in the province was 944,000 KRW. This represents an increase of about 27.2% (202,000 KRW) compared to the survey conducted five years ago in 2018 (742,000 KRW). In particular, among household heads by age group, those in their 40s identified 'education costs (28.0%)' as the most burdensome expense.
The average monthly private education expense per student was 656,000 KRW. This also increased by 152,000 KRW (30.2%) compared to 2018 (504,000 KRW).
The most common reason for receiving private education was 'to get ahead of others' (42.3%). This was followed by 'feeling anxious if not done because others are doing it' (21.9%).
Satisfaction with the public education environment was reported at 25.9% satisfied and 21.2% dissatisfied. Compared to the survey two years ago in 2021, satisfaction increased by 3.0 percentage points, while dissatisfaction decreased by 6.1 percentage points.

Meanwhile, among household living expenses, the most burdensome category was food expenses at 27.5%, followed by housing costs at 26.9%, health and medical expenses at 17.7%, and education costs at 10.6%.
