The 'Street Food Zone Safety Project' inspected this time is aimed at revitalizing the old downtown commercial district around Baegun Square in Nam-gu. As the Street Food Zone was established and the number of visitors increased, crime prevention facilities such as CCTV guide signs, emergency bell guide signs, solar markers, and safety mirrors were intensively installed to ensure the safety of food zone visitors and prevent crimes in nearby one-room apartments and residential areas.

The Gwangju police promote the installation of crime prevention facilities in vulnerable areas every year. This year, they utilized 200 million KRW from the autonomous police budget and 450 million KRW in special grants secured through the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s project competition to install customized crime prevention facilities such as security CCTV in five project sites including Baegundong, advancing the crime prevention environment improvement project.

Through the on-site inspection of this project site, the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed the appropriateness of the facility installations, listened to residents’ opinions to check if additional improvements were needed, secured the 2024 crime prevention environment improvement budget, and plans to promote environmental improvements in collaboration with local governments.

Regarding this, Han Chang-hoon, Chief of Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency, said, “We will actively collect citizens’ opinions to continuously discover crime prevention policies tailored to regional characteristics, and through collaboration with local governments and others, promote crime prevention environment improvements to ensure that citizens can live safely and securely. We will continue to make efforts to protect daily life.”
