DGIST President Lee Geon-woo Holds Inauguration Ceremony, Emphasizes "Bold Innovation, Aspiring to Become a World-Class University"
DGIST held the inauguration ceremony of its 5th President, Lee Geon-woo, at 11 a.m. on the 20th in the university headquarters convention hall.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by about 500 people, including Chairperson Roh Jeong-hye, guests from politics, government, academia, and the local business community, as well as DGIST faculty, staff, and students.
At the inauguration ceremony, President Lee Geon-woo presented goals such as producing world-class research groups in each research field, attracting global scholars, strengthening human competitiveness through enhancing diversity among members (nationality, culture, career, and experience), enhancing global publicity functions, and achieving mutual development through communication with the local community.
In his inaugural address, President Lee said, “DGIST has recently achieved meaningful results in consecutive global university rankings and has entered the ranks of universities attracting worldwide attention,” adding, “Now, to develop DGIST into a world-class university, we will inherit existing traditions and strengths while boldly pursuing innovation in areas requiring new changes, striving to become a university where researchers worldwide want to collaborate, a university that is the top recommendation for corporate research requests, and a university that the public can take pride in.”
He continued, “We aim to open a great future where DGIST becomes a world-class university,” and added, “We will nurture global leaders needed by the nation and society, attract excellent faculty and researchers from around the world to play key roles, contribute to the development of the local community and industry, and ultimately become a university that all citizens can be proud of.”

Lee Geon-woo, appointed as the 5th President of DGIST, graduated from Gyeonggi High School and Seoul National University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and earned his master's and doctoral degrees from M.I.T. Graduate School. After being appointed as a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University in 1986, he served as Dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, President of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, and President of the Korean Society for Engineering Education.
