Establishment of the Basic Science Research Institute Phase 2 and Four Major Science and Technology Institute Campuses by 2030
Implementation of the 2nd Basic Plan for the Establishment of the Institute for Basic Science with a Scale of 309 Billion Won
The second phase of the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) headquarters and the expansion of campuses at four major science and technology institutes, with a budget of 309 billion KRW, will commence.
On the 18th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will establish and implement the "Second Basic Plan for the Construction of the Institute for Basic Science" in accordance with the second basic plan of the International Science Business Belt.
This project primarily involves constructing research facilities for the IBS headquarters and campuses. The second basic plan, which will be implemented from this year through 2030, includes the construction of the second IBS headquarters and research buildings at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), and the second KAIST campus. The second IBS headquarters broke ground in May, and the UNIST campus research building, currently in the design phase, aims for completion by 2026. The GIST, DGIST, and second KAIST campuses are scheduled to be completed by 2030, depending on the selection and operation of IBS research groups.
Previously, under the first basic plan with an investment of 324.5 billion KRW, the first IBS headquarters, the first KAIST campus, and the POSTECH campus research buildings were constructed and completed in December last year.
