"Japan and Southeast Asia Travel Remains Popular Next Year"
Jeju Air's Travel Trends for Next Year
"Short, Frequent, Free, Whenever Possible"
Jeju Air conducted a survey on its social networking services (SNS) for six days from the 30th of last month to the 5th. Analyzing responses from 3,010 participants, the company presented four travel trends: short travel distances and schedules, frequent trips, freedom to travel anytime, and triggers that inspire travel.
Among the 3,010 respondents, 93.3% (2,809 people) answered that they have plans for overseas travel next year. Preferred travel destinations (including multiple responses) showed Japan as the most popular with 1,526 mentions (28.9%) out of a total of 5,280. Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Laos followed with 1,302 mentions (24.6%). Among the 2,013 respondents who traveled this year, the most visited regions were also Japan (38.4%) and Southeast Asia (28.2%), leading the company to analyze that these routes will remain popular next year.
The main reason for preferring medium- and short-distance travel destinations (multiple responses allowed) was “convenient flight schedules or travel times that fit the itinerary,” with 820 responses (42.2%) out of 1,943 total. The next reason was “lower local prices that reduce travel expenses,” with 485 responses (25%). Among all respondents who chose “I will travel overseas next year,” 71.3% (2,003 people) preferred short trips of five days or less.
Jeju Air analyzed that the majority of this year’s travel demand was driven by the “pent-up” phenomenon, where suppressed consumption due to COVID-19 has increased. For next year, the company expects travel to become more routine, with people taking advantage of their free time by using annual leave or weekends to travel frequently.
Analysis of preferred overseas travel periods for next year showed that more than half of the total 4,750 responses (multiple answers allowed), 2,870 (60.4%), favored traveling during the traditional off-seasons of March to June and September to October. Hobbies and interests were found to have a significant influence on travel decisions. Among the 2,809 respondents planning overseas travel next year, 1,986 (70.7%) said they have decided to travel solely to enjoy hobbies or interests.
