Both teams agreed to establish the Korea-UK CCUS Research Cooperation Platform to promote CCUS technology innovation, improve efficiency, ensure safety, and accelerate commercialization through cooperation in the entire CCUS cycle including capture, utilization, storage, and transportation.
The research cooperation platform aims to contribute to achieving global net-zero targets by leveraging advanced technologies, strengthen Korea’s CCUS sector capabilities, and create exemplary cases of international cooperation.
The research cooperation platform consists of a Committee and Working Groups, with Kwon Yi-gyun, head of the Korea CCUS Promotion Group, and Professor Kim Jong-min of the University of Cambridge serving as co-chairs of the Committee. The Working Groups will be composed of Korean and UK researchers who will conduct research and cooperation activities on mutually agreed topics.
The Preparatory Committee was formed with the goal of holding the first regular exchange meeting of the Korea-UK CCUS Research Cooperation Platform in the UK around March to April next year. The Preparatory Committee is chaired by Kwon Yi-gyun, head of the Korea CCUS Promotion Group, and organized with about 10 experts including Yoo Jeong-gyun, Center Director (Korea Institute of Energy Research), Kim Gu-young, Center Director (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources), Cho Hwan-joo, Center Director (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources), Kim Hee-sik, Center Director (Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology), Kim Kyung-shin, Senior Research Fellow (Korea Maritime Institute), and Professor Ahn Jin-ho (Seoul National University).
Kwon Yi-gyun, head of the Korea CCUS Promotion Group, stated, “The Korean government is making large-scale investments and promoting technology development for the commercialization of CCUS technology with the goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. Efforts are being made to promote full-cycle CCUS technology development and foster industry through establishing legal grounds for CCUS promotion. Through research cooperation with the UK, which has high CCS capabilities and technology levels due to North Sea oil and gas field development and is expanding investments in CCUS-related technology development, we aim to contribute to the mutual development of the CCUS sectors of both countries and further contribute to achieving global net-zero targets.”
