Korea Island Promotion Agency and Gwangju Shinsegae Deliver Groceries to Wando
Korean Island New World Stamping Challenge Season 2 Successfully Concluded
19 Islands with Fewer than 20 People Including Seopdo and Hwangjedo, 120 Households
The Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI, President Oh Dong-ho) announced that on the 29th, it held a food delivery ceremony for the ‘Korean Island New World Stamp Challenge’ Season 2 at the Wando Marine Healing Center in collaboration with Gwangju Shinsegae (CEO Lee Dong-hoon).
On this day, the two organizations delivered food products worth approximately 8.4 million KRW (consisting of 5 types including fair trade items) to Wando County (Governor Shin Woo-cheol).
The delivered food products are scheduled to be distributed to 120 households on 19 islands in the Wando area with populations under 20, including Seopdo, Hwangjedo, and Udo.
For some islands, KIDI will deliver the items directly. On the afternoon of the same day, KIDI visited Masakdo to hold an ‘On-site Island Forum’ and personally delivered food products to island residents.
This is the first time an on-site island forum has been held on islands with fewer than 20 residents, organized to prevent regional extinction and to discover practical island policies and development projects.
‘Korean Island New World Stamp Challenge’ Season 2 is a project jointly planned by KIDI and Gwangju Shinsegae to revitalize tourism in island regions and raise awareness about islands at risk of extinction.
This project is the second challenge following Season 1 held last year in the Yeosu area, including Gaedo, Hwahwado, and Sado.
Season 2 of the ‘Stamp Challenge’ gathered a total of 29,517,705 steps through a walking challenge on three islands in the Wando area: Nohwado, Bogildo, and Soando. Accordingly, food products will be delivered to island residents, and participants will receive challenge souvenirs such as goods through a lottery.
In Season 1, the goal of 10 million steps was exceeded, and food products were delivered to 80 households on 9 islands with populations under 20 in the Yeosu area.
Oh Dong-ho, President of KIDI, said, “Thanks to the great interest and participation, we were able to deliver warmth to island residents again this year following Season 1,” adding, “This challenge is not just an event but the easiest and fastest way to activate islands by encouraging people to visit and walk on them.”
