Baek Jong-han, Gwangju Seo-gu Council Member, Demands Measures on Population Decline and Bedbug Issues
Baek Jong-han, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council, urged the local government to establish countermeasures in response to population decline and bedbug outbreaks.
On the 27th, during the 317th regular session plenary meeting, Councilor Baek mentioned the newly coined terms "Shrinking Economics" and "Bendemics (bedbug + pandemic)" in a 5-minute free speech, highlighting related issues.
Councilor Baek pointed out, "There are cases of unused leave due to economic burdens and career interruptions caused by taking leave related to low wages."
He continued, "To create conditions for work-life balance, the public sector must take the lead in fostering a culture of gender equality in childcare and implementing policies that reduce childcare burdens, thereby making Seo-gu a better place to raise children."
Regarding the recent bedbug outbreaks in Seo-gu, he said, "The number of bedbug cases nationwide is rapidly increasing. Active measures such as hygiene inspections of vulnerable groups' residences and multi-use facilities, preparation of disinfection plans, and formation of task forces are necessary."
Finally, Councilor Baek asserted, "In solving this nationwide issue, we cannot rely solely on central government guidelines and budgets. Local governments must actively establish detailed policies tailored to the realities of their communities and seek solutions to the problem."
