MFDS Publishes E-book Featuring Recipes to Reduce Sodium and Sugar Intake
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 24th that it has published an e-book titled "A Healthy Simple Meal" under the theme "A Healthy Convenient One-Meal Dish" to help promote healthy eating habits by reducing sodium and sugar intake.
Since 2012, the Ministry has selected menus submitted to the Sodium and Sugar Reduction Cooking Contest and, with expert consultation, has improved recipes and types of ingredients to make them easy for anyone to use, publishing the results annually.
The newly published "Samsamhan Bapsang" includes 10 home meal replacement recipes submitted to last year's Sodium and Sugar Reduction Cooking Contest, along with cooking tips to reduce sodium and sugar. The theme of last year's cooking contest was lunch boxes.
The new cooking tips include information such as "Using potassium-rich tomatoes helps expel sodium" and "Using herbs like oregano and bay leaves enhances flavor while reducing sodium usage."
Additionally, nutritional information such as calories, carbohydrates, and proteins per serving is provided for each home meal replacement menu, and step-by-step cooking methods from ingredients to preparation examples are included with photos to make it easy to follow at home.
"Samsamhan Bapsang" can be accessed on the Food Safety Korea website and is also available as an e-book through online bookstores such as Kyobo Bookstore and Aladin.
The Ministry stated, "We have produced booklets including Samsamhan Bapsang cooking tips for use in chronic disease prevention education for diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions, distributing them to 259 local public health centers. Next year, we plan to distribute them additionally to cooking departments and nutrition-related associations."
