A 'Gyeonggi-do Style Mini Hydrogen City' to be Established in Yongin
Hydrogen Production from Biogas Generated by Food Waste
Establishment of 182t Annual Production Facility in Sinwon-ri, Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu
A 'mini hydrogen city' that produces hydrogen using biogas generated from food waste will be established in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Yongin-si announced on the 22nd that it was recently selected in the '2023 Mini Hydrogen City Creation Support Project' contest hosted by Gyeonggi-do and secured 5 billion KRW in provincial funding. This project is promoted by the province with the purpose of creating eco-friendly hydrogen energy self-sufficient small cities or complexes, revitalizing the hydrogen industry, creating jobs, and contributing to regional economic activation.
Yongin-si explained that it received high evaluation in the contest by presenting a growth model that produces hydrogen using biogas generated from the food waste treatment process at Yongin Ecotown and can expand related businesses into various fields in the future.
With this contest selection, Yongin-si plans to invest a total of 10 billion KRW, including the secured 5 billion KRW in provincial funding, to install facilities capable of producing 182 tons of hydrogen annually by 2026 on a 3,300㎡ site in Sinwon-ri, Pogok-eup, Cheoin-gu. The city also plans to install a hydrogen co-firing facility with a capacity of 890 kW (a method mixing liquefied natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen).
To promote the project, the city will sign a memorandum of understanding this month with participating institutions such as the High Technology Research Institute and Korea Western Power, and start establishing a master plan and basic design for the project in January next year.
Based on this contest project, the city plans to actively promote follow-up projects such as expanding the distribution of hydrogen commercial vehicles, building hydrogen charging stations, and gasification of sewage sludge to increase hydrogen production.
