Chungnam Province Launches Initiative to Build 'Organic Light-Emitting Display' Ecosystem
Chungnam Province is initiating the establishment of an inorganic light-emitting display ecosystem.
On the 21st, Chungnam Province announced that Governor Kim Tae-heum, Asan Mayor Park Kyung-gwi, and Shin Yong-jin, President of the Korea Optoelectronics Technology Institute (KOOTI), signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the provincial office for the ‘Establishment of KOOTI Chungnam Branch and Promotion of Regional Industry.’
According to the agreement, each institution will collaborate to establish a branch with a system of 1 headquarters and 3 centers in the Tangjeong Techno General Industrial Complex in Asan City.
The Korea Optoelectronics Technology Institute, headquartered in Gwangju, is a leading domestic research institute specializing in light. Since its establishment in 2001, it has led the development of the display industry through fundamental research, infrastructure construction, and the creation of a photonics convergence ecosystem.
The Tangjeong Techno Industrial Complex is the target site for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s ‘Inorganic Light-Emitting Display Technology Development and Ecosystem Construction’ project, and the branch will serve as a stepping stone for passing the preliminary feasibility study of this project in the second half of next year.
Chungnam Province expects that if the branch is established as planned in the Tangjeong Techno Industrial Complex, it will accelerate proactive responses to the next-generation display market, foster new industries such as semiconductors and optics, and promote the creation of a world-class display cluster.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to invest a budget of 950 billion KRW in the ‘Inorganic Light-Emitting Display Technology Development and Ecosystem Construction’ project by 2032, including 790.5 billion KRW for technology development and 159.5 billion KRW for infrastructure. This is the largest scale among all social overhead capital (SOC) projects to date, with 700.1 billion KRW of the total project cost coming from national funds.
Governor Kim Tae-heum of Chungnam Province stated, “Chungnam accounts for 20% of the world’s display sales, and among these, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) sales rank first globally.” He added, “Currently, Samsung Display is investing 4.1 trillion KRW to prepare for 8.6-generation OLED production to maintain its technological lead in the related field.”
He continued, “For Chungnam to maintain its leadership in the display sector, the establishment of the KOOTI branch is of utmost importance,” and said, “We will actively support the early establishment of the KOOTI branch, the lead institution, by 2028 to ensure stable preliminary feasibility study responses and speedy project implementation.”
