9.77-Ton Fishing Vessel Fire, No Casualties Reported
Jeonnam Yeosu Maritime Police Station (Chief Go Min-gwan) announced, "A fire broke out on a 9-ton fishing vessel near Munseo, Yeosu, resulting in the complete destruction of the hull, but fortunately, no casualties occurred."
According to Yeosu Maritime Police, at around 7:06 PM on the 20th, a fire was reported by the captain on fishing vessel A (9.77 tons, Yeosu-registered, with 1 crew member) approximately 13 km offshore from Munseo, Samsan-myeon, Yeosu City.
After receiving the report, Yeosu Maritime Police dispatched patrol boats and rescue teams and requested assistance from nearby vessels. Upon arrival at the scene, they found Captain Lee (46) safely on a life raft drifting in the surrounding waters and rescued him without injury.
Upon arrival at the accident site, the Maritime Police confirmed that the fire was spreading throughout the entire fishing vessel. They used extinguishing water and foam extinguishing agents to suppress the major flames, but the hull of the vessel was completely burned.
The rescued captain Lee (46) was in the passenger cabin when he noticed the smell of burning and flames. He attempted to extinguish the fire himself using a fire extinguisher, but when the flames could not be controlled, he reported the incident via radio and escaped using the life raft he had on board.

A Yeosu Maritime Police official stated, "We are currently extinguishing the remaining fire on the vessel and plan to move it to a safe area once the situation is under control." He added, "We will investigate the exact cause of the accident by interviewing the captain of the fishing vessel."
