POSCO Steel Byproducts Reborn as Icheon Ceramics
Selected 'Couple Coffee Cup and Snack Plate Set' by Lee Gyutak in POSCO Promotional Icheon Ceramic Souvenir Design Contest
On the 20th, Icheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it selected Lee Gyutak (Gosanyo)'s "Couple Coffee Cup and Snack Plate Set" as the winning entry for the "POSCO Promotional Icheon Ceramic Souvenir Production Contest," co-hosted with POSCO and the Korea Ceramic Technology Institute.
This contest was held as part of the "Establishment of a Circular Economy Model for Ceramic Materials Using Steel By-products" business agreement signed by Icheon City, POSCO, and the Korea Ceramic Technology Institute.
The contest was organized with the purpose of creating new ceramic materials using major by-products from POSCO's steel production process, such as water-quenched slag and iron oxide. To this end, the organizers directly provided steel by-products to ceramic artists in the Icheon area.
Lee Gyutak's work expressed the flow of molten steel symbolizing POSCO through black glaze made with iron oxide and slag glaze made by mixing water-quenched slag and Icheon's rice straw ash.
He said, "I aimed to develop eco-friendly ceramic products by utilizing steel by-products as the main raw materials for ceramic glazes.” He also added, "POSCO's iron oxide has a higher purity compared to commercial products, making it easier to achieve black coloration,” and "the glaze mixed with water-quenched slag had a smooth texture, resulting in a unique yet more subdued color when the ceramics were fired."
POSCO plans to proceed with a supply contract to use Lee's work as promotional souvenirs.
