Hydrogen vs Ammonia, Storage and Transportation Technology Seminar... Korea Future Technology Education Institute
The Korea Future Technology Education Institute announced that it will hold the "Liquefied Hydrogen vs Ammonia, Next-Generation Hydrogen Storage and Transportation Technology Development Status and Value Chain Seminar" both online and offline on December 14 at the Sapphire Hall of the Federation of Korean Industries Building in Yeouido, Seoul.
Recently, as the speed of developing large-scale hydrogen production and transportation technologies has accelerated to establish a hydrogen economy, a technological conflict has arisen between the method of storing hydrogen in liquefied form and the method of storing it as ammonia, a type of hydrogen compound.
The liquefied hydrogen method has a volume about 1/800th that of gaseous hydrogen, making it highly compact and safe for storage, with transportation efficiency more than seven times higher. Unlike ammonia, it has no toxicity or odor and can be used immediately as an energy source for hydrogen fuel cells without the need to re-extract hydrogen.
On the other hand, ammonia has about 1.5 to 2 times the hydrogen storage capacity per unit volume compared to liquefied hydrogen, is easy to store, and can utilize the already established ammonia industry infrastructure, thus securing high economic feasibility. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), ammonia transportation costs about 0.7 euros per kilogram for 1000 km, making it more economical than liquefied hydrogen, which requires about 0.9 euros.
The seminar will feature presentations on topics including ▲Liquefied hydrogen vs liquefied ammonia value chains and life cycle assessment (LCA) ▲Latest technologies for ammonia production, storage, and utilization as a green hydrogen carrier ▲Current status of liquefied hydrogen technology development and infrastructure establishment plans ▲Technical analysis and value chain of green hydrogen maritime transport vessels ▲Clean ammonia cracking technology and ultra-high-efficiency hydrogen combined power generation linkage technology ▲Development and utilization of low-temperature operating direct ammonia fuel cells (SOFC) ▲Detailed standards of the latest hydrogen law and standards and accident cases for ammonia extraction facilities ▲Ammonia decomposition and combustion technology and current status of gas turbine combustor development.
