Meeting Shakespeare's Four Great Tragedies through Talchum: 'Othello and Iago'
One of Shakespeare's Four Great Tragedies, 'Othello,' Reinterpreted as Talchum Dance Drama - Making the Nearly Pantomime 'Talchum' Accessible to Everyone with Barrier-Free Experience
Geumcheon Cultural Foundation announced that it will hold the mask dance play "Othello and Iago" at Geumnarae Art Hall from November 16 to 18 for three days.
This performance was selected through the 2023 Performing Arts Distribution Cooperation Support Project and will be presented accordingly.
"Othello and Iago" is a reinterpretation of Shakespeare's one of the four great tragedies, "Othello," expressed as a mask dance play. It depicts the tragic process in which the noble and brave general "Othello" doubts and kills his wife "Desdemona" due to the scheming of his subordinate "Iago." It vividly portrays human vanity, distrust, jealousy, and desire.
The most distinctive feature of this work is that the play has been adapted into a mask dance play. The audience can glimpse the humor and charm unique to Korean mask dance. Three actors who have mastered Goseong Ogwangdae (Heo Chang-yeol), Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori (Lee Joo-won), and Gangnyeong Talchum (Park In-seon) perform, carefully expressing human psychology through dance movements, while the music group "Namu" composed and performed the music to enhance the work's completeness.
Additionally, the performance will be presented as a "barrier-free" show so that people of all ages and abilities, regardless of gender or disability, can enjoy it. A sign language interpreter will appear on stage to explain the actors' movements and lines, and text descriptions will be provided on stage. Detailed audio descriptions will guide not only the actors' voices but also the stage directing elements to help the audience understand the play.
