The Second Ever 'Couple Generals' Emerged... Brigadier Generals Jeong Kyunghwa and Im Ganggyu
The second-ever couple of generals in the history of the armed forces has been born.
According to the Ministry of National Defense on the 7th, in the second half general officer personnel reshuffle conducted the previous day, Brigadier General Jeong Gyeong-hwa (Nursing Officer Academy Class 32), Director of Preventive Medicine at the Armed Forces Medical Command, was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General (one-star general).
Brigadier General Jeong was commissioned in 1992 and has served as Head of the Faculty at the Nursing Officer Academy and Director of Preventive Medicine at the Army Headquarters Medical Office. The military promoted Brigadier General Jeong and assigned her as the Superintendent of the Nursing Officer Academy.
Brigadier General Jeong's husband is Brigadier General Im Gang-gyu (Korea Military Academy Class 48), Commander of the Armed Forces Command and Signal Command. With Brigadier General Jeong's promotion, a couple of generals have been born for the first time in nine years since Brigadier General Kim Gwi-ok (Female Military Officer Class 31) and Major General Lee Hyeong-seok (Korea Military Academy Class 41) in 2014.
Meanwhile, in this personnel reshuffle, Cha Jong-hee, Director of Budget Operations at the Army Headquarters (Female Military Officer Class 39), was also promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General.

As of last year, the number of female soldiers reached 16,000. The proportion of female personnel (officers and non-commissioned officers) among the authorized strength increased from 6.2% in 2018 to about 9% last year.
