3rd Geumcheon Fashion Film Festival Grand Prize Awarded to 'Assa Gaori'
The 3rd Geumcheon Fashion Film Festival Closes... 66 Films Screened Over 4 Days, Grand Prize Awarded to Director Go Chan-ho's "Assa Gaori"... Fashion Shows, Special Exhibitions, and Various Side Events Held, Growing into a Fashion Film Festival
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that the grand prize of the 3rd Geumcheon Fashion Film Festival was awarded to director Go Chan-ho's film "Assa Gaori."
This film festival was held over four days from November 3 to 6 at Lotte Cinema Gasan Digital Branch and the Mario·Cartnet factory. Out of 1,574 films submitted this year, a total of 66 films were screened, including 41 finalists, the opening film, official invited films, and past award winners. At the awards ceremony held on the final day of the festival, a total of nine awards were presented, including the grand prize.
The grand prize was awarded to Go Chan-ho's "Assa Gaori." The film uncovered the memories of female workers hidden behind the reputation of being the driving force of past industrialization. It was praised for containing a thematic consciousness most fitting for the Geumcheon Fashion Film Festival and for the director’s affectionate perspective on the past and present of Garibong-dong.
In his acceptance speech, director Go Chan-ho said, "Just as countless people’s efforts go into making a single piece of clothing, I was able to receive this grand prize thanks to the help of many, including the sewing workers who appeared in the film." He added, "I will continue to make films that tell the stories of those who quietly work in unseen places."
The Mario Outlet Jury Special Award was given to "Burger Song Challenge" (director Kim Min-ha). This work tells the story of a pure family trying to buy the garment of dignity called 'face' due to the forced wearing of status. It was praised as a film where the 'fashion' in the movie and the 'passion' of the emerging director are beautifully woven together.
The Audience Award, selected by on-site voting from festival attendees, was awarded to "Ham Jin-abi" (director Lee Sang-min). The film captivated viewers by expressing human guilt for an unforgivable sin committed in the past with dense direction.
Special awards were given as follows: ▲ Cinematography Award to "Upbo" (cinematographer Kwon Yong-jik) ▲ Acting Award to "The Unbearable Lightness of Mimi" (actor Jo Yoon-ji) ▲ Art Award to "Stop and Go" (art director Jo Soo-bin) ▲ Costume Award to "Echo" (director and costume designer Im Yu-ri) ▲ Makeup Award to "Nightmare" (makeup artist Yoon In-a).
The newly established Youth Jury Special Award this year went to "Hug Me, Hug Me Straight!" (director Lee Ji-an). The Youth Jury, operated in collaboration with Sungkyul University Creative Culture Workshop, consisted of 28 high school and university students interested in film. After watching five designated films, they selected one that caught their attention for the award.
This year’s festival attracted attention by dividing film screenings and side events into two spaces under the theme of "fashion." At Lotte Cinema Gasan Digital Branch, the finalist films were screened, while at the Mario·Cartnet garment factory, built in 1969 and opened to the public for the first time this year, a variety of events such as the opening ceremony, fashion show, and special exhibitions were held, receiving great responses from audiences and participants.
Executive Director Jung Yoon-chul said, "The Geumcheon Fashion Film Festival started with the region’s specialized industry, 'fashion,' but it also focuses on all visual elements in films." He added, "We thank the many directors and filmmakers who presented excellent works."
