The 'Seongbuk Youth Unbeatable Film Festival,' regarded as a treasure trove of the South Korean film industry, will open on the 9th of this month.
The Seongbuk Youth Unbeatable Film Festival is hosted by Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, organized by the Seongbuk Cultural Foundation, and supported by the Korean Film Council and the Seoul Metropolitan Government. This year marks its third edition.
This festival, aimed at widely promoting excellent short films and discovering talented young directors, will be held from the 9th to the 15th at the Arirang Cine Center (Arirang Indiewave, 82 Arirang-ro, Seongbuk-gu).
The Seongbuk Youth Unbeatable Film Festival call for entries was conducted in June targeting young people in South Korea. A total of 804 works were submitted, of which 34 advanced to the finals. The final judging panel includes film director Park Seok-young, film critic Nam Da-eun, and actress Kim Si-eun. Winners will receive a total prize of 16 million KRW.
The festival period also features a rich special program. In particular, there is already great interest in the 'Actor Lee Yeon Exhibition: Another Story,' which focuses on actor Lee Yeon, who has become the center of attention for outstanding performances transcending age and gender in works such as 'Juvenile Justice,' 'Kim Bok-soon,' 'After School War Activities,' and 'Beneficial Fraud.' A special session to watch Lee Yeon's early short films is also prepared.
The opening films are 'Wave' and 'House of Existence,' directed by Jung Yu-mi, which were invited to the short film section of the 76th Locarno International Film Festival. The congratulatory stage will be hosted by singer-songwriter Park So-eun, who conveys stories of youth with elegant lyrics, and the MCs will be actress Kang Jin-ah from 'Six Nights' and announcer Yeo Hyun-ah.
Through the 'Short Film Production Support Project' aimed at discovering talented creators, the work of director Kim Min-sung will be featured. The well-made short film 'Summer Vacation,' which reflects on family emotions through a somewhat different mother-daughter relationship, will make its debut. The director, actors, and film critic Kim Si-seon will attend this event.
The 'KAFA (Korean Academy of Film Arts) 40th Anniversary Special Exhibition: Youth Fantasia' and the Seongbuk Sequence section, showcasing excellent short films produced by students from universities in Seongbuk-gu (Kookmin University, Seokyeong University, Sungshin Women's University, Korea National University of Arts), also attract attention.
Lee Seung-ro, mayor of Seongbuk-gu and chairman of the organizing committee for the 3rd Seongbuk Youth Unbeatable Film Festival, said, "Seongbuk-gu is the city where Chunsa Na Woon-gyu filmed Arirang and is home to the largest number of universities nationwide, earning it the nickname 'City of Film' and 'City of Youth.' Amid growing concerns about the crisis in Korean cinema, we will do our best to make the Seongbuk Youth Unbeatable Film Festival a fountainhead of Korean cinema through various support and interest, allowing young filmmakers to challenge themselves and freely pursue their dreams."
