SK On Supplies Batteries for Polestar High-Performance Electric Vehicles
From 2025, Polestar Luxury 4-Door GT 'Polestar 5' Equipped
SK On will supply batteries for the high-performance electric vehicle models of the Swedish electric car brand Polestar.
SK On announced on the 6th that it has signed a battery supply contract with Polestar. Accordingly, SK On will supply battery modules for the ‘Polestar 5’ starting in 2025. This is seen as a reconfirmation of the demand for high-performance NCM (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese) batteries in the high-end electric vehicle segment.
The Polestar 5 is a luxury 4-door grand tourer (GT) that Polestar plans to produce from 2025. It boasts excellent driving performance with a maximum output of 650 kW (884 hp) and torque of 900 Nm (Newton-meters), and will be produced based on the 'Bespoke bonded Aluminium Platform' developed at Polestar’s UK R&D center. Torque refers to the rotational force generated when a certain force is applied over a certain distance. Nm refers to the rotational force generated when a force of 1 Newton (N) is applied vertically at a distance of 1 meter.
The cells installed in the Polestar 5 are ultra-wide high-nickel batteries (with nickel content over 80%) measuring 56 cm in length. They exhibit high energy density and improve charging performance and energy density by increasing the silicon ratio used in the anode.
By securing the rigidity of the module case, the battery passed all stringent conditions in the thermal propagation (TP) test, significantly enhancing safety. The overall cooling performance was also improved through structural efficiency by directly applying the cooling plate, which controls battery heat, to the module.
Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said, "The continuous collaboration with SK On since the early days of the Polestar brand has finally borne good results. The Polestar 5 is being developed rapidly, and it will be equipped with SK On’s high-capacity battery to provide performance befitting the status of a grand tourer (GT)."
Jidong Seop, CEO of SK On, said, "We are pleased to collaborate with Polestar on a premium electric vehicle model. We will strengthen our partnership with Polestar through this contract and create new opportunities."
