Went to Ancestral Grave but It Was Gone... Police Investigating Illegal Reburial
Illegal Relocation of 19 Graves from Old Cemetery
Police Conducting Witness Interviews
In Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, an incident occurred where about 10 graves in an old communal cemetery were illegally damaged and relocated, prompting the police to launch an investigation.
On the 3rd, the Yongin Dongbu Police Station announced that it is investigating after receiving a complaint from the local district office requesting punishment of Mr. A, the representative of the land-owning corporation of the old communal cemetery located in Cheoin-gu, Yongin City, for violating the Act on Funeral Services and Related Matters.
According to the complaint, on September 18, just before the Chuseok holiday, Mr. B, who visited his father's grave in the cemetery, discovered that the graves had been damaged and reported it to the district office. At the scene, the grass had been completely dug up, turning the area into a wasteland, and only a sign reading "무연고" (no known relatives) remained where the graves had been.
After receiving the complaint, the district office visited the site the next day and confirmed that a total of 19 graves had been illegally relocated and one grave was damaged, subsequently filing a complaint with the police.
The communal cemetery had been managed by Yongin City until February 2021, when it was sold to Mr. A's corporation. Since then, the corporation has completed the relocation of about 270 graves after reaching agreements with their relatives. However, it is understood that the relocation of the 19 problematic graves proceeded without any agreement.
