Focus on Environmental Factors as Well as At-Risk Students... Establishing a Comprehensive Educational Safety Net
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it is operating the "2023 Education Guardian System," which provides customized guardian activities for at-risk students in collaboration with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
The Education Guardian System was established to support the wholesome growth of children and adolescents and to build a tight educational safety net through cooperation among schools, families, and local communities.
The operation period is from September to December. The support targets are elementary, middle, and high school students in the area who are in educational blind spots or require complex support.
Education guardians continuously meet with students and serve as healthy neighbors and social protectors in the community by providing customized educational programs from the students' perspective, including ▲learning support ▲emotional and psychological support ▲special care.
In July this year, the district selected four organizations as operators of the Education Guardian System through a joint public contest with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education: ▲Yeongdeungpo-gu Youth Counseling Welfare Center ▲Big Sister’s Kitchen Social Cooperative ▲Korea Art Therapy Counselor Social Cooperative ▲Hyangginamu.
When a school recommends a student in need of guardianship, one to four education guardians are assigned per student. Education guardians identify the deficiencies of at-risk students and participate in solution meetings and educational safety net councils for customized problem-solving.
Especially this year, the program focuses not only on supporting at-risk students but also on resolving environmental factors surrounding students through activities such as ▲guardian activities supporting homeroom teachers of maladjusted children ▲strengthening family functions of youths in educational blind spots ▲comprehensive guardianship activities for students facing severe complex crises.
