Muan-gun Discusses Practical Support Measures for North Korean Defectors

Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 2nd that it held the ‘2023 Second Half Muan-gun Regional Council for Support of North Korean Defectors’ on the 1st to discuss stable local settlement plans for North Korean defectors.

Established in 2017, the Muan-gun Regional Council for Support of North Korean Defectors is a public-private consultative body created to support the settlement of North Korean defectors. It consists of 10 representatives from related organizations including Muan-gun, Muan Office of Education, Muan Police Station, Muan-gun branch of the Federation of Korean Freedom, Jeonnam Hana Center, and the South-North Hana Foundation.

At the council meeting, each institution reviewed the progress of projects for 2023 and discussed the operation and development direction of the council for 2024.

Additionally, as a result of discussions on projects that would help North Korean defectors residing in the area successfully settle in the local community, a plan to provide local gift certificates that can be easily used for purchasing daily necessities and hospital expenses, offering practical assistance, was adopted.

Lee Gwang-jin, Director of the Autonomous Administration Division, said, “North Korean defectors in the area are facing many social and economic difficulties in the local community,” and added, “We will actively collect the opinions proposed through the council and implement effective settlement support policies.”
