Relieving Traffic Congestion in Front of Myeongchon Main Gate, Ulsan... Early Expansion of One Left-Turn Lane
Expectations for Alleviating Chronic Traffic Congestion During Commute Hours
The traffic system at the intersection in front of Myeongchon Main Gate in Buk-gu, Ulsan, which suffers from chronic congestion, will be changed.
On the 2nd, Ulsan City announced plans to alleviate the chronic traffic jams during rush hours by adding one left-turn lane.
The construction for lane changes is scheduled to take about three weeks, starting from the 11th, utilizing times when weekend traffic volume is low. It is expected that the revised lane operation will be possible within November.
Located on San-eop-ro, the intersection in front of Myeongchon Main Gate is a section with heavy traffic following Asan-ro and Beonyeong-ro. Due to the high proportion of large freight vehicles, traffic congestion frequently occurs not only during rush hours but also during daytime on this main arterial road.
In particular, the left-turn lane toward Hyundai Motor at the Myeongchon Main Gate intersection currently operates with only one lane, but heavy left-turn traffic during rush hours has worsened chronic congestion.
Ulsan City plans to alleviate traffic congestion by reducing one straight lane toward Buk-gu Office and securing an additional left-turn lane toward Hyundai Motor, allowing many vehicles to turn left at once.
This project was originally scheduled to be implemented in June 2024, after the completion of the relocation construction of the Taehwagang Station bus turnaround facility, but it has been prioritized for implementation in November this year to promptly resolve citizen inconvenience caused by traffic congestion.
Additionally, Ulsan City plans to change the left-turn lanes toward Jinjang Myeongchon District from one lane to two lanes to improve congestion on San-eop-ro. However, since the addition of the left-turn lane will reduce the existing straight lanes from four to three, drivers are advised to exercise caution.

Seo Daesung, Director of the General Construction Headquarters, said, “Once the project is completed, it is expected that the chronic congestion in the area around Myeongchon Main Gate will be greatly alleviated, significantly improving the traffic environment. Although construction will be carried out to minimize inconvenience to citizens, some traffic congestion and safety accidents are expected during the construction period, so we ask for citizens’ understanding and safe driving.”
