Gyeonggi-do to Begin COVID-19 Vaccinations for High-Risk 'Infants and Children' Starting from the 1st
Gyeonggi Province began offering free COVID-19 vaccinations starting from the 1st for high-risk infants and young children (6 months to 4 years old) and children (5 to 11 years old). This vaccination campaign follows the high-risk group vaccinations that started on the 19th of last month, targeting seniors aged 65 and older, immunocompromised individuals aged 12 to 64, and members of infection-vulnerable facilities. Additionally, the general public can also receive the vaccine if they wish.
The vaccine used is the XBB.1.5 monovalent vaccine, which is highly effective against the XBB variant that has a high prevalence domestically. Vaccination is available 3 months (90 days) after the last dose.
Children aged 5 to 11 are eligible for one dose within the period regardless of previous vaccination history, while infants and young children aged 6 months to 4 years need 1 to 3 doses depending on their prior vaccination status. However, for infants and young children, cross-vaccination between Pfizer and Moderna is not allowed. If they have prior vaccination, they can receive the infant Pfizer vaccine when it is introduced in December.
As of the 31st of last month, 406,134 people have completed their vaccinations. This is three times the number compared to 134,474 people during the same period last year.
A Gyeonggi Province official stated, "Even if someone has been infected with COVID-19, immunity decreases over time, so timely vaccination is important to prevent severe illness and death among high-risk groups. From this season, vaccinations can be administered on the same day after confirming the availability of medical institution stock without prior reservation. We urge those recommended to get vaccinated as soon as possible to prepare for the resurgence this winter."
