Jeju Coast Guard Conducts 'Maritime Accident Response Capability Enhancement Tabletop Exercise'

Jeju Maritime Police Station (Chief So Byung-yong) announced on the 1st that it conducted the 4th quarter 2023 tabletop exercise assuming a complex situation such as loss of contact and sinking accidents of water leisure equipment to strengthen maritime accident response capabilities the previous day.

This tabletop exercise was conducted to discuss improvements for the prevention of leisure equipment accidents and efficient response measures in case of accidents, as safety accidents frequently occur due to the increasing number of water leisure activity participants every year, and recently a motorboat grounding accident occurred.

In particular, for water leisure activities within 10 nautical miles, there is no obligation to report, making it difficult to identify whether a vessel has departed and the information of onboard personnel, which poses many challenges for response.

The exercise discussed supplementary measures based on past response cases through a discussion format, response plans in case of leisure equipment sinking, on-site response capabilities and task assignments, and necessary improvements for accident prevention.

A Jeju Maritime Police official said, “This exercise focused on prompt action and rational response according to the manual in the event of an actual maritime accident caused by water leisure equipment,” adding, “We will improve maritime safety accident response capabilities to create a safe Jeju sea where the public can feel secure.”
