HD Hyundai's shipbuilding affiliates, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, announced on the 25th that they have recently established a "Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Plan during LNG Fuel-Powered Ship Construction" as a national project under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. This national project involves HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Korea Gas Safety Corporation, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering, Dongwha New Tech, and RH Tech.
The participating companies and institutions plan to demonstrate and then apply a method to recover evaporative gas generated during the sea trial process of LNG-powered ships by 2026, recycling it as city gas for the shipyard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions during ship construction.
The evaporative gas emitted during the sea trial process of LNG-powered ships is methane, one of the major greenhouse gases. Methane has a stronger greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide.
To carry out this national project, Korea Gas Safety Corporation will establish safety standards for the evaporative gas treatment system, while Dongwha New Tech and RH Tech will be responsible for the detailed design and manufacturing of the evaporative gas treatment system.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will apply the evaporative gas treatment system to actual shipbuilding sites to demonstrate the recovery of evaporative gas and verify its effectiveness through the development of greenhouse gas reduction methodologies. The Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering will develop the greenhouse gas reduction activities of Korea’s shipbuilding industry as an agenda item for the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will support the successful progress of the project by providing the basic concept and design plan for the evaporative gas recovery and recycling system.
Last year, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering explained the necessity of treating evaporative gas generated during ship construction to government ministries and related industrial organizations and proposed the concept of evaporative gas recycling. Subsequently, it was recognized as necessary when submitted as an agenda item to the New Business Regulation Innovation Committee chaired by the Office for Government Policy Coordination.

An HD Hyundai official stated, "Through this national project, we have established a voluntary greenhouse gas emission reduction plan even for items that are not currently subject to direct carbon and greenhouse gas emission regulations in the international community," adding, "We will take the lead in carbon reduction by actively utilizing the LNG-related technological capabilities we have accumulated so far."
