Dong-A University Honorary Professors Jeong Man-hee and Choi Chang-ok Receive the 66th Busan City Cultural Award
Dong-A University honored Professor Emeritus Jeong Man-hee of the Law School and Professor Emeritus Choi Chang-ok of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering with the 66th Busan City Cultural Award.
The Busan City Cultural Award, established in 1956, is the most prestigious award in the region, having recognized a total of 416 recipients to date.
Busan City received recommendations for 17 candidates across 10 categories from local cultural and artistic institutions, organizations, and citizens. After review by the Cultural Cooperation Committee, a total of 8 category winners were finally selected. The award ceremony was held on the 23rd at the Busan City Council’s main conference room.
Professor Emeritus Jeong was selected in the “Humanities and Sciences” category in recognition of his contributions to the development of constitutional law in Korea through over 40 years of work, publishing more than 20 books and 86 papers, and his dedication to nurturing local talent including legal professionals and public officials, as well as enhancing the competitiveness of regional universities.
Professor Emeritus Jeong majored in law at Dong-A University, which was founded by his grandfather, Seokdang (石堂) Jeong Jae-hwan. After earning his Ph.D. in law from Korea University, he conducted research at the East Asia Institute of the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), as well as at the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University’s Faculty of Law in Japan.
He joined Dong-A University in 1980 and served as a professor for 39 years before retiring in August 2019. During his tenure, he held administrative positions including Dean of the College of Law, Dean of the Graduate School, and Vice President.
He also served as president of the Korean Constitutional Law Association and the Korean Association of Comparative Public Law, advisor to the National Assembly’s Constitutional Research Advisory Committee, and election advisor to the National Election Commission. He received the Order of Service Merit (Hongjo Geunjeong Medal), the Korean Constitutional Law Association Academic Award, and the Korean Association of Comparative Public Law Academic Award, among others.
His major publications include What Is the Constitution to Us?, Introduction to Constitutional Law, Lectures on Constitutional Law, Constitutional Amendment and Political System Reform, Studies on Constitutional Amendment, The Constitution and Governance Structure, Fundamental Issues of the Constitution, Modern Constitution and Parliamentarism, The U.S. Constitution and Power Structure (Editor), and Theory of Political Parties Law.

View original imageProfessor Emeritus Choi was selected in the “Natural Sciences” category for his contributions to the development of the casting industry through his efforts in nurturing engineering talent, technology development, and establishing industry-academia cooperation while serving as a professor in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering (now Materials Science and Engineering).
He worked as a researcher at Daehan Shipbuilding Corporation and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology from 1965, and joined Dong-A University as a professor in 1980, serving for 25 years. He currently serves as Professor Emeritus and as a board member of the Dong-A Hak-suk Foundation.
He has received the Korean Foundry Society Paper Award, the Korea Federation of Science and Technology Societies Excellent Paper Award, the Dong-A University Dong-A Academic Award, the Busan Teachers’ Association Federation Educational Merit Award, and the Korean Federation of Teachers’ Association Educational Merit Award.

He has held leadership roles including Dean of the College of Engineering at Dong-A University, Dean of the Graduate School of Industrial Technology, President of the Korean Foundry Society, Director of the Korean Resource Recycling Society, Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information, Chair of the Metal History Division of the Korean Institute of Metals and Materials, and committee member of the organizing committee for the International Conference on the History of Metals (BUMA).
