Establishment of Jeokdaebong Hiking Trail Secures Total Project Budget of 5 Billion Won

Gohung-gun, Jeonnam Province (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that Jeokdaebong on Geogeumdo Island, which boasts a pristine natural landscape, has been finally selected as a new site for the Ministry of Environment’s ‘2024 National Ecological Trail Development Project,’ with 5 billion KRW in national funding to be invested by 2026.

The National Ecological Trail refers to trails that allow effective experiences of the area's nature, culture, and history, while systematically protecting and restoring exploration resources to discover and manage sustainable paths.

This public contest project selected Jeokdaebong on Geogeumdo Island in Gohung-gun as the final site after preliminary review and on-site inspection evaluations of 23 projects submitted from 21 cities, counties, and districts nationwide.

Jeokdaebong on Geogeumdo Island achieved a remarkable success by receiving high scores through detailed explanations and on-site guidance regarding the necessity of establishing a national ecological trail and the suitability of the site’s history, culture, and excellent ecological resources during the preliminary review and field evaluation.

Gohung-gun plans to create a premium trail along the 13.2 km section of Jeokdaebong on Geogeumdo Island, where terrestrial, wetland, and marine ecosystems coexist, by installing observatories, deck roads, rest areas, and convenience facilities, and to enable visitors to enjoy the pristine natural scenery through systematic maintenance and management of existing paths.

A county official said, “We will develop Jeokdaebong on Geogeumdo Island, which holds a distinctive theme and offers beautiful natural landscapes, into a premium national ecological trail representing South Korea.”
