Hyundai Glovis Rugby Team Wins First National Sports Festival Championship
Gyeongbuk's Leading POSCO E&C Defeats 23-20 to Win Gold Medal
The rugby team affiliated with Hyundai Glovis announced on the 20th that they won the championship at the 104th National Sports Festival (National Sports Festival). The rugby team participated in the general division representing Incheon Metropolitan City. In the final held on the 19th at Jindo Public Stadium in Jeollanam-do, they defeated the Gyeongbuk representative POSCO E&C 23-20 to win the gold medal.
In the general division, a total of 12 regional teams participated, including Incheon (Hyundai Glovis), Gyeonggi (Kyung Hee University), Gyeongnam (Gyeongnam Rugby OB), Gyeongbuk (POSCO E&C), Gwangju (OK Financial Group Uthman Rugby Team), Daegu (Armed Forces Athletic Corps), Busan (Pusan National University), Seoul (Yonsei University), Jeonnam (Korea Electric Power Corporation), Jeonbuk (Wonkwang University), Chungnam (Dankook University), and Chungbuk (Chungbuk Selection).
In the match that day, Gyeongbuk first scored 3 points with a penalty kick. Hyundai Glovis rugby team’s Jeong Buhyun also leveled the score at 3-3 with a penalty kick. Afterwards, both teams exchanged drop goals and penalty kicks, maintaining a 6-6 tie. In the latter part of the first half, Gyeongbuk succeeded in scoring the first try of the match and also converted the additional conversion kick, ending the first half at 6-13.
In the second half, Hyundai Glovis rugby team launched fierce attacks right from the start, successfully scoring a penalty kick, a try, and a conversion kick in succession, overturning the score to 16-13. Then, Gyeongbuk scored a try and a conversion kick to regain the lead at 16-20. In a fierce battle, Hyundai Glovis player Lee Jinkyu made a quick individual breakthrough to score a try, turning the game back to 21-20, followed by Jeong Buhyun’s conversion kick, sealing the final score at 23-20.
The Hyundai Glovis rugby team includes key players Jeong Yeonsik and Lee Jinkyu, who played crucial roles in winning the silver medal at the recent Hangzhou Asian Games in China. Starting this year, foreign player Imoshi Lavati from rugby powerhouse Fiji also joined the team, actively playing under the leadership of coach Kim Yonghoe.
Hyundai Glovis rugby team added to their list of achievements by winning the gold medal at this National Sports Festival following their victory at the 2nd tournament of the 2023 Korea Super Rugby League in May this year.
