Prosecutors Seek 4-Year Prison Sentence for Military Service Broker Involved in 'False Epilepsy' Cases
The prosecution has requested a 4-year prison sentence for a broker who devised a 'false epilepsy' scenario to help conscripts evade military service.
At a trial held on the 18th under the presiding of Judge Kim Yoon-hee of Criminal Division 9 at the Seoul Southern District Court, the prosecution requested a 4-year prison sentence and the confiscation of criminal proceeds amounting to 217.6 million KRW for Kim (37), an administrative agent and military service broker indicted on charges including violation of the Military Service Act. For Lee, who commissioned Kim to evade military service, the prosecution requested a 1-year prison sentence.
Kim was indicted on charges of providing scenarios for evasion methods and collecting consultation fees from clients seeking to evade military service from May 2020 to November last year.
The prosecution maintained its April sentencing recommendation for Kim, stating, "He undermined the fair military service system, and the crime was serious, meticulous, and planned." Factors such as being a first-time offender and confessing to the crime were considered favorable for sentencing.
