Solo Opera Company Presents Great Opera Series 'La Boh?me' Performance
At the Opera Theater of Yesuljeondang from the 17th to 19th of next month
The Sol Opera Company will perform the opera 'La Boheme,' depicting the friendship and heartbreaking love of young Bohemians, at the Opera Theater of the Seoul Arts Center from the 17th to the 19th of next month.
La Boheme is one of the representative works of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini (1858?1924). The Sol Opera Company plans to consecutively stage Puccini's works as part of the 'Great Opera Series' until next year, which marks the 100th anniversary of Puccini's death. Starting with La Boheme this year, they will perform two more Puccini works next year, including Turandot.
La Boheme is a four-act opera based on the novel 'Sc?nes de la vie de boh?me' by French author Henri Murger. It premiered in February 1896 at the Teatro Regio in Turin, conducted by Toscanini. Set in Paris around Christmas time, it is a work frequently performed worldwide during the year-end season.
The production is directed by veteran director Kim Suk-young, who won the Korea Opera Award in 2019 for directing another Puccini work, Madama Butterfly. Italian conductor Walter Atanasi will collaborate on the production.
The female lead role of Mimi will be performed by Italian soprano Maria Tomassi and Professor Kim Eun-hee from Ewha Womans University’s vocal music department. Tomassi graduated from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and has won the Luciano Neroni International Vocal Competition, Umberto Giordano International Opera Competition, and the New York Altamura Caruso International Competition. She is currently active in major theaters worldwide, including Vienna, Salzburg, Zurich, and New York.
The role of Rodolfo, a poor poet and Mimi’s lover, will be played by Max Jota and Park Ji-min. Jota was selected as the best male vocalist among male opera singers worldwide by the opera magazine Opera Britannia in 2014. Park Ji-min graduated from Seoul National University and the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, has performed as a principal singer at the Covent Garden Opera House, and has won the Vienna Belvedere International Competition and the French Art Song International Competition.
